Most of C’s ambiguities arise from its declaration syntax and cast operator. I believe many of these design choices made sense when C was developed. On multiple occasions, Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie explained why certain syntaxes—declarations, arrays, casts, and so on—were chosen.
